Vintage Typewriter Key Locket - Antique Silver Oval

$36.00

A beautiful vintage typewriter key, culled from mid-20th century Smith Corona, Royal or Underwood typewriters, rests in a pretty crown edge bezel setting atop our 22x30mm oval locket. Each locket comes with an 18" chain, and our signature gift box. (please drop us a note if you'd like a longer chain)

All of the typewriter keys we use in our pieces are authentic, repurposed keys, all over 60 years old. As a result, the keys show a bit of wear, and often have imperfections on the rims or faces. I think this is what adds to their character and beauty. The Japanese have a practice called wabi sabi, which, in its simplest form, means beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". In one sense wabi sabi is a school of thought whereby the student of wabi sabi learns to find the most simple objects interesting, fascinating and beautiful. Fading autumn leaves would be an example. Wabi sabi can change our perception of the world to the extent that a chip or crack in a vase makes it more interesting and gives the object greater meditative value. Similarly materials that age such as bare wood, paper and fabric become more interesting as they exhibit changes that can be observed over time. (Wikipedia)

The Weekend Store celebrates the art of wabi sabi in our jewelry. Each imperfection represents a stroke of the key that may have been used to write love letters, that first great novel, or poetry to a distant friend. Your locket will be a combination of modern functionality with the charm of the past, each one of a kind, with its own story to tell. Just like you.
